Singer Gary Lewis Misquoted in Story About Brother's Death

A headline circulating the internet misquotes entertainer Gary Lewis regarding his brother's death. Although the star of the 1960s rock 'n roll group, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, said that his father, comedian Jerry Lewis is partially responsible for Joseph Lewis' death, because Joeseph died partially of a broken heart, he did not say what the internet headlines profess him saying. Gary Lewis was refering to the fact that when Joseph became addicted to narcotics, his father turned his back on him. When Joseph, the youngest of the Lewis boys spoke out against his father in the tabloids, Jerry Lewis disowned his son. At the time of the tabloid interview, Joseph Lewis was suffering from drug addiction.

As a followup to the story, Gary Lewis has offered this statement:

"When the media began questioning me about the death of my brother Joseph, all I could think about was my anger towards my dad for distancing himself from his "real kids." But right now the only thing that really matters to me is remembering my youngest brother Joseph, and looking forward to spending some happy family moments with his three kids. Joseph had a good soul and I want his children to know that from his oldest brother."

March 29, 2009 (Worldwide News Syndicate): An abundance of information has surfaced over the past year making it quite clear that Jerry Lewis has a 57 year old, out of wedlock daughter. The two most convincing pieces of evidence are a sworn statement made by the woman's mother stating that Jerry Lewis is the biological father, and the inarguable clincher is a positive DNA test, played out on national TV, and granted by Jerry Lewis' own son, Gary Lewis.

In the 1960s and beyond, "Gary Lewis and the Playboys," were one of the most popular rock 'n' roll bands in the world, with more than 40 million record sales to their credit. But Gary Lewis has recently attained hero status by coming to the aid of his sister, Suzan Lewis, a one time New York debutante in the 1960s, who eventually found herself disabled and homeless, living on the streets of Florida.

Gary Lewis has known Suzan Minoret, who now uses the name Suzan Lewis, since 2004. After seeing her credentials, hearing her story, and looking into her face (which mirrors her father's face), Gary Lewis was convinced. Although none of the other Lewis family members refuted Suzan Lewis' claims, none of them ever offered to help her in any way. When TV's Inside Edition came up with the idea of a DNA test, Gary Lewis was right there for his sister. In Gary Lewis' words, "Everybody has the right to know where they came from and who they are."

Suzan Lewis was snatched from harms way by Gary Lewis' personal manager, after she was nearly arrested for vagrancy in Florida. Due to her inability to work as a result of injuries sustained in a nearly fatal car accident, the daughter of Jerry Lewis would have likely ended up in a homeless shelter, with just the clothes on her back. Things are looking much better for the soon to be entertainer and homeless advocate, but where has Jerry Lewis been in all of this?

Since the positive DNA test proving Gary Lewis and Suzan Lewis have the same biological father, they have gone on the radio talk show circuit together. Time and time again, Suzan Lewis has stated she wants nothing from her father except public acknowledgement, and maybe a day together now and then. She often reminisces about the day her father did accept her as his own, during a 1980 meeting in France. But the following day Jerry Lewis' manager told Suzan Lewis to stay away because, "You look so much like Jerry, people will know you're his daughter!" Nothing has changed since 1980. Jerry Lewis refuses to see his biological daughter, or even comment on her to the press. He even tried to have her removed from her seat when he learned she was in his audience at a 2008 New York theatrical appearance.

American's are very forgiving when their public heros make verbal faux pas, but they are not tolerant of a blatant display of neglect when it comes to their children, regardless if the offspring is 57 years old. Even the irreverent talk show host Howard Stern became very reverent on his show, in the defense of Suzan Lewis.

If Jerry Lewis is considering another stint at hosting the annual Muscular Dystrophy Telethon, he will need to come to terms with his daughter and with the American people, before he utters the words, "Jerry's Kids."

During a live radio interview with Howard Stern, the controversial talk show host offered this scenario to Suzan Lewis, the biological daughter of entertainer, Jerry Lewis: "Maybe if you'd had Muscular Dystrophy you would have been more accepted (by your father). You're a little too healthy." Stern's comments ring true when you consider Jerry Lewis' dedication to, "Jerry's Kids," a term coined by Lewis himself which refers to victims of Muscular Dystrophy. Stern also drew a parallel to "the king of comedy's" total lack of response to his own kid as torturing her.

DNA test results positively linking Suzan Lewis to her father Jerry Lewis were made public on TV's Inside Edition. Despite the conclusive scientific evidence, the pain has gotten worse for Suzan. Jerry Lewis still remains silent about his 57 year old daughter. How can someone bring a human being into this world, and then cast her aside, when all she wants is her father's acceptance? In this case only Jerry Lewis can answer that question. A close friend of Suzan Lewis said, "It's the worst kind of mental cruelty. It's hard to believe they call the child "Illegitimate," when it's the deadbeat parent who deserves the title.

Gary Lewis, is the first born child of entertainer Jerry Lewis, and is the rock 'n' roll legend of, "Gary Lewis and the Playboys." He gave his DNA for the test because, "No body else in the family came forward to help Suzan, and everyone deserves to know where they came from and who they are." The test proved that Suzan and Gary Lewis share the same biological father.

Suzan Lewis has known she is the daughter of the original, "Nutty Professor," since her mother told her the facts in 1976. Her mom even signed a legal statement swearing to that fact. But Jerry Lewis only spent one day with Suzan, and that was in Paris, France in 1980. Suzan was living in Paris at the time, and went to the hotel where her father was staying. Suzan claims Jerry not only confessed to being her father that day, but together they called her mother who was in the USA. When Suzan attempted to call her father the next day, at his suggestion, he got word to Suzan through his manager, that he wouldn't see her anymore in fear that someone would catch on they were daughter and dad. No amount of personal letters, private birthday greetings, or even phone calls to Jerry Lewis' home would get the Oscar winning, "humanitarian," to respond to Suzan.

Suzan, who bears an uncanny likeness to her father, claims that she was devastated each time she would see him on TV lamenting that the father of six sons wished he had a daughter. The pain became unbearable when Jerry Lewis and his wife SanDee adopted a female child in March of 1992, because he continues to this day to brag that he "finally has the daughter" he could never have.

When Suzan went to see her father's performance in New York City in late 2008, someone from his staff spotted her in the front row, and she was told by theater staff that, "Mr. Lewis will not go on stage unless you move your seat to the back of the theater, or leave!" Suzan who is disabled, refused to move, and the show finally began, 20 minutes late. But the damage was done to Suzan, and the mental anguish continued.

Suzan Lewis wants nothing more from her father except his acknowledgement and acceptance. The formerly homeless woman who still suffers from the ravages of pain from her nearly fatal 1990s automobile accident, is working towards being an entertainer and lecturer, speaking in behalf of the homeless and disabled. Her father's endorsement will go along way to help Suzan to help others. But that does not seem to be in the cards.

Jerry Lewis founded and became National Chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association in 1952, the same year Suzan Lewis was born. He was given the 2009 Gene Hersholt Humanitarian Award, by the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences, for his tireless efforts in behalf of, "Jerry's Kids." But the Muscular Dystrophy Association and its National Chairman, Jerry Lewis, should do some serious soul searching about a positive response to Suzan Lewis before the next MDA telethon. LOS ANGELES, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Hollywood icon Jerry Lewis' son Gary has agreed to submit to a DNA test in an effort to determine if Suzan Lewis is his half-sister, "Inside Edition" said.
Jerry Lewis, who is to be honored Sunday at the 81st Academy Awards, has never publicly acknowledged Suzan as his daughter, and declined comment for an "Inside Edition" report last month on the paternity claims made by Suzan, who is also known as Suzan Minoret.

Suzan Lewis claims her mother had an affair with Jerry Lewis and says she was conceived in a suite above the famous Copacobana nightclub in New York City where Jerry had been performing with Dean Martin.

Suzan told "Inside Edition" her mother made the stunning revelation after being diagnosed with cancer. Suzan also said her mother signed an affidavit attesting that the legendary funnyman is her father.

"She didn't want to die and me not know where I came from," said Suzan, who has been down and out in recent years due to injuries suffered in a nearly fatal car accident. She said she has also lived on the streets, and survives on a meager disability allowance.

The results of Gary Lewis' DNA test are to be broadcast on "Inside Edition" next month.

During a nationally televised interview on Inside Edition, Suzan Lewis told correspondent Paul Boyd that she is prepared to submit to a DNA test. The 56 year old woman would like to put to rest all speculation regarding her family heritage.

February 9, 2009 – A spokesperson for Suzan Lewis assured Star Time News that a DNA test would not be for her father, Jerry Lewis, or for herself. She has no doubt of her heritage, and Jerry Lewis has already acknowledged their kinship during a private visit in 1980. A DNA test will be for the rest of the world, to establish Suzan's credibility, so that she can be an effective voice for the homeless and disabled in the United States.

Until April of 2008, Suzan Lewis was homeless, and living in her car in Florida. The former New York City debutante, whose mother and stepfather owned some of New York's most elegant night spots during the 1950s and 60s, was nearly killed in an early 1990s automobile accident, which left her disabled. Now she is living modestly in Philadelphia, and planning to use her family name to gain attention as a spokesperson for the often misunderstood homeless people on the streets in the USA.

Rick Saphire Accepts Apology From Blogger for Bogus Jerry Lewis Story

Internet blogger Scott Marks published the following apology to Rick Saphire for reporting a fictious story implicating Saphire in a deal to secure money from Newsweek for an interview with Jerry Lewis:

Several months ago I ran a story that accused Jerry Lewis’ publicist Rick Saphire of attaching a $20,000 price tag to one-on-one interviews with his legendary client. I also took a few cheap shots at Rick and several of the other celebrities he represents. Not only did the story prove to be bogus, Rick turned out to be a very nice guy. We have since patched things up and become pallys.

Unfortunately, Rick won’t be in Vegas for this year’s Extra Special Special: “I will not be at the Telethon this year. I’ll be in Los Angeles with Gary Lewis who has elected to forgo the show this year. We leave on Labor Day from L.A., for a two week tour of the Philippines with Gary Lewis and the Playboys.” When Rick returns, I’ll sit him down for an interview.
